Painting is seasonal everywhere, just in different ways. In the north, exteriors stop when it gets cold. In Florida and along the Gulf, the summer storms and the heat set the schedule. The companies that stay busy all year plan their marketing two months ahead of the work.
Northern and mid-Atlantic markets
January and February. Slow for exteriors, good for interiors. Push interior rooms and cabinets: people are inside, looking at their walls. Call last year's exterior leads and offer early booking for spring. Fix your website, prices and photos now.
March. Book exteriors. Send a text to every past customer and every estimate that did not close last fall. Open spring walkthrough slots online.
April to June. Exterior season starts once nights stay above about 45°F and days reach 50°F or more. Calendars fill fast. Give realistic start dates, take deposits to lock them, and keep interiors for rain days.
July and August. Peak exterior work. Start early to beat the heat; paint should not go on surfaces in direct hot sun. Keep answering calls even when you are booked out; a lead for September is still a lead.
September and October. The last exterior window. Homeowners who waited all summer want it done before winter. Prices can hold firm. Start promoting interiors for November and December, when people prepare for guests.
November and December. Interiors before the holidays, then a slowdown. Cabinets fit here well. Plan next year.
Florida and Gulf Coast markets
January to April. The best exterior months: dry, mild, low humidity. Book them hard in November and December. Snowbird homes want work done while the owners are here.
May. Exteriors still good until the rains begin. Push the last exteriors and start promoting interiors.
June to September. Rainy season and hurricane season. Afternoon storms almost every day: start exteriors at 7 a.m., stop by 1 or 2 p.m., watch the radar. This is interior season: rooms, whole house repaints for summer move-ins, cabinets. Before and after a storm, homeowners need stucco repair, fascia work and touch ups.
October to December. Rains ease, exterior season comes back. Promote "get your house ready before the holidays" and book January and February.
What to post, month by month
Your blog and Google posts should follow the season, a month ahead of the work:
- Before exterior season: what an exterior costs per square foot, how to pick colors, why prep matters
- Before interior season: cost to paint a room, best paint finishes for kitchens and baths, how long a whole house interior takes
- Before the holidays: cabinets, guest rooms, quick refreshes
- Before storms (in hurricane areas): sealing stucco cracks, fascia and soffit repair
A PaintPilot site gets new posts written each month, timed to your market. Read exterior painting cost per square foot and cost to paint a room for examples of what homeowners search.
Plan your crew around the season
Hiring for the busy season in the middle of it is too late. If you will need a second painter for April to October, start looking in February, train them on interiors in March, and they are ready for exteriors when the calendar fills. In Florida, flip it: hire in the fall for the January to April exterior rush. Keep your best painters through the slow months with interior and cabinet work, even at a thinner margin; finding good painters is harder than finding jobs.
Smooth the slow months
- Sell interiors and cabinets in the off season with a firm start date
- Offer early booking for next season's exteriors with a deposit
- Work with property managers, whose unit turns happen year round
- Text past customers whose last paint job is 5 to 7 years old
Raise prices at the right time
The best time to adjust your prices is just before the busy season, when the calendar fills anyway. Paint costs usually go up once or twice a year; update your calculator and price sheet the same week, not six months later. A 5 percent increase on a $5,000 exterior is $250 you keep, and almost no customer notices.
Weather days
Write the weather policy into the estimate: exterior days move when it rains or the temperature falls below the paint's minimum, and the customer gets the new date by text. Moving a job in one tap and notifying the customer automatically saves a lot of calls; that is part of painting scheduling software.
